You Are My Sunshine! Adventures in Dyeing

I've been searching for a mustard cardigan for a while and I haven't had any luck finding the right one. So I decided to dye one!!! I purchased an off white/khaki wool cardigan for $1.50 at my local Salvation Army.

I purchased Rit Dye in Golden Yellow at Hobby Lobby. I even used their weekly 40% coupon on it!
My mother said she used Rit dye back in her day!

Step 1: Soak your sweater with water.

Step 2: Mix your dye with hot water until dissolved. 3 gallons per box. I only used half of the box, so I only need 1.5 gallons. Certain materials require you adding either a cup of vinegar or salt. Wool required vinegar. So I added .5 a cup because I only used half of the box.

Step 3: Submerge your article of clothing in the dye. The box says to stir continually until desired shade is reached. So you could be stirring for 10-30 minutes! Keep in mind that one your colored piece dries it will be significantly lighter!

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly until water runs clear. Start rinsing with warm water first and gradually transition to cold water. Once water is clear, wring out excess water and hand dry. I hung my clothing over my tub so possible dye dripping could not ruin anything.

Finished product!!!!
